Help Ethan and Ollie to have a wheelchair accessible home
Warkworth, Auckland
We are asking for help to modify our home to make it accessible for Ethan and Ollie, who are brothers that both have a genetic muscle wasting disease, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Ethan (14) and Ollie (11) started their life like any other babies, born with all 10 fingers and all 10 toes, but as Ethan grew up, unlike his peers he struggled with running, climbing and general mobility. By the time Ethan was diagnosed with DMD at 3yrs old, his brother Ollie was born, so we had him tested and unfortunately, we found he had the condition also.
They spend a lot of time in hospital, see countless medical professionals and take a lot of medication in the hope of slowing down this relentless condition. But there is no cure for DMD, it will eventually affect every muscle in the body, including heart and lungs and rob them of the ability to use their arms and legs. After the initial shock of such a devastating diagnosis, we have vowed as parents to give them the best life possible. It’s hard as parents to comprehend that their condition will only get worse and the best we can do is slow the muscle wasting down. So, we need your help to do some extensive modifications to our home; to make it a wheelchair accessible space, to ensure they are as independent as possible within their own home.
